Pain Vs Discomfort

**I thought I posted this last week, so I’m happy to re-post it today and see what you all think. I’m still having a bit of discomfort


Tuesday(July 3rd)- 5 miles another slower easy run, 4 mile hike up Bell Canyon

Wednesday(July 4th)- 1 mile<—yes you read that right

Tuesday was a busy day/night. I love busy days, but Tuesday I didn’t get home until 11pm and I was beat! I went on a beautiful hike with a bunch of young women from my neighborhood/church. It was 96*  outside but on the way back down it was a perfect 80*. We made it to a beautiful lake and some of the girls decided to jump in, they’re so fun!

Wednesday I woke up so tired and not feeling any kind of workout. I told myself, “Just run 1 mile and if you want to stop you can.” I thought for sure once I started I would want to keep going. Nope, so I stretched, but then just ended up sitting on my foam roller looking at Facebook. Ha



Pain VS Discomfort

As a runner I think it’s very important to know the difference between pain and discomfort. When you first start getting into any new workout you usually experience a lot of discomfort. The next day you may even be really sore. That is all normal.

It’s not, however, normal to be in pain. This article has a great list of the stages of injury and how to treat an injury. This article from Runner’s World is really awesome because it goes through all the specific areas you could get an injury and what you should do for that specific injury. The particular area I’m interested in:


So why am I talking about this? Well, surprise surprise, I have a dull achy pain on the outsides of my knee to under the knee cap. It started on one leg and now my other leg hurts. I’m not sure what I’m doing differently with my workouts, but it’s been a good 1.5 weeks of pain not just discomfort. * Right in between my thumb and finger in the below pic.


When I’m sitting it will sort of throb and when I’m running or walking I feel like it’ll crap out. If I’m sitting and my legs are not able to fully stretch(like in a car) they cramp up. Massage hurts the area, it doesn’t feel like a sore muscle. I’m bummed and was hoping it would go away. I’m going to be RICEing my legs and see if that helps.

Any advice? Anyone know what this could be?

  2. I’m basically convinced that all injuries are from weak hips. I’ve read that often that is the case for knee issues. Maybe try to focus on some hip strengthening exercises like clam. The other day I did the core cruncher NTC workout, which I JUST discovered (I always did the ab burner one), and I’m convinced the one exercise when you put the medicine ball between your legs and do crunches (it called luggage or suitcase, or something relating to travel) gave me a killer hip and ab workout.

  3. Not sure what the injury is, but I have experienced the “I was hurting on one side, but I kept running and now the other side is hurting.” I think an injury or tenderness forces you to change your gait and the other leg has to compensate.

  4. It sounds similar to the knee issues I was having this spring. I went to the dr. and he gave me a fancy name…you can read about it here…

    but no matter what that super stinks! I would do what you can, definitely RICE, and I’m not sure how much cross training you do, but maybe see if other activities are pain free and would help strengthen you!

  5. My knees have a dull ache in them basically constantly because apparently my cartridge is all but gone in both knees according to my doctor. I have to take glucosamine and it helps, but there’s still pain, I just can’t run as long or as fast as I used to. I hope that you can find out what’s causing your pain soon so you can get back to normal 🙂

  7. Injuries are definitely not fun. You are smart to back off and not run through the pain (like most runners do). Hope you bounce back quickly my friend!

    It sounds like “runners knee”. Basically happening because your IT band is too tight. I had it pretty badly a couple years ago. It hurt to walk (especially going downstairs – that’s a big sign) and running was out of the question. I had to pull out of a planned half at Disney 😦
    I also spent a couple weeks in PT getting it stretched out. I would recommend looking up some stretches online and get on that foam roller as many times a day as you can fit in!!

  9. sounds like an IT band issue…I’d do a lot of foam rolling of your IT band and stretching!!

  11. uck never fun. I would definitely back off for a while, knee injuries are never something to mess with. I would see a sports doctor if you can. they are a wealth of knowledge

    oooo Sharsti girl… I feel your pain, I am so sorry!!!!!!!! I’m sure that there are numerous things that could be the issue, but RICE is best… it always works for me! I’ve also had to go out and buy compression for my knee, achilles, IT band (I have three separate little black things for all three aches and pains). It looks ridiculous, but I can definitely say it helped to have something directly on the pain. I hope you’re feeling better since I see I’m delayed in responding… Ahh girlfrannn no injuries!!!
