Treadmill Tuesday: Pyramid Workout

Monday- 5 miles outside with Jessica

Jessica was kind enough to get up really early and run with me. It was surprisingly not as cold out as I thought it would be. It was dark when we first started though.

20131118-211253.jpgLuckily, it lightened up pretty quickly. Jessica is training for a marathon so it’s been fun being her partner on training runs. I felt good until the very end and something in my quad started hurting. I’ve been foam rolling and stretching and will play it by ear.

The one thing that’s not fun when you’re running in the cold is being cold. I’m glad I have a few staples that I can wear in the winter to keep me warm. The only thing I was lacking, was an ear warmer headband. I was super jealous of Jessica’s, so I headed over to good ol’ Walmart and snatched up a headband for $1.50. Score!

I wanted to share with you a fun treadmill workout that I did on Friday. I love coming up with new treadmill workouts to keep me entertained, so throughout the winter I’ll be sharing them with you!

I call this the Pyramid Treadmill Workout

20131118-211639.jpg It’s simple, start with a 1 mile warmup then increase your speed by .1 every minute while increasing your time by 1 min too. In between each interval I walked(at a fast pace) for 1 minute. For example, I ran for 2 minutes at a 6.3 mph then walked for 1 minute at 4mph, then ran for 3 min at a 6.4 mph. Once you run for 5 min at 6.6mph(or whatever speed you choose) you go back down, i.e. 4 min at 6.5mph.

Does that makes sense? I hope so, now go and try it out and tell me about it=)

What are your favorite winter clothes to run in?

Do you run on the treadmill in the winter or outside?

About Sugar Plum Runner

Welcome to the Sugar Plum Runner! I grew up in WA state, but currently reside in UT with my husband Josh, son Jackson, and 2 daughters Lily and Claire. I love running, but I have never been so inspired to run, race, and blog about it since 4 years ago after I had Jackson. I grew up playing soccer and cheered in high school. My favorite part of both sports(and yes I consider cheer leading a sport) was the conditioning. I found myself running after practice was over on my own. That's when I realized that running may be the sport I really loved.

Great workout to try on the treadmill! I love my ASICS winter jacket, it is seriously the best jacket ever! I never use to run on the treadmill, but now I am running because it feels better on the knees :).

Cute picture of you girls! Running headbands are my new favorite thing this season.. I’ve never had one before and now it’s all I want to buy… That’s SUPER cheap compared to my $30 lulu headband that I now regret buying. Well, kinda. Ha! 🙂
I love treadmill workouts like that. In fact, that’s the only way you’ll see me on a treadmill – doing intervals like that!
Stretch out that quad, girly! ❤

  4. That headband looks cozy! I have a leopard one that I cannot find at the moment! I think that’s a good excuse to go buy another one because it’s about to get chilly again!! 🙂 Have a great day!

  5. these are the hardest but SOOO tough, a great training

  6. Running outside in the winter is rough, but the treadmill can be so boring! Awesome job getting that early morning run in!

  7. If it’s winter I’m running on the treadmill. Trying to dodge piles of snow and layers of ice? No, I’ll stick with the indoors haha!
